FRAUD ALERT - December 2009

SMS Text Message & Phone Phishing Scam Alert

Once again, an SMS phishing attack is in progress and has affected members at several financial institutions across the country. The "smishes" (SMS phishes) are being distributed by phone and SMS text message and are being portrayed as coming from that person's bank or credit union.

The SMS text message says something similar to:

"This is an automated message from SCE Federal Credit Union. Your ATM card has been suspended. To reactivate, call 317.222.1112."

Some variations of the message have other phone numbers.

The voice message caller IDs are shown as coming from a variety of different states. The voice messages are also automated and suggest that the member's account has been suspended and requests the listener to pres 1 for more information. Pressing 1 transfers to a request for the account number, PIN, authorization code, etc.

Responding to these requests could result in the theft of your identity. DO NOT provide this information. Legitimate financial institutions will not contact members through these means to verify information - and will NEVER ask you for your PIN.
