Important Information Regarding Target Corporation Credit and Debit Card Security Breach

Breaking news on December 18th, 2013 reported that a data breach occurred at Target, potentially affecting as many as 40 million debit and credit cardholders. According to Target, you may have been affected if you used your debit or credit card at Target from November 27th to December 15th, 2013.

If you used your SCE FCU Visa credit or debit card at Target during this time period, please call us at 800.866.6474 option 3. We’ll gladly generate a replacement card for you at no charge. Until that replacement card is received, we suggest you consider lowering the limit on your current card. And as always, we strongly encourage you to review your account regularly for any unauthorized transactions.

While it can be frightening to think that your information may have been compromised, please rest assured that you can use your SCE Federal Credit Union card with confidence. We have multiple layers of security in place and are prepared to help safeguard you against this type of fraud:

  • Card Data Mismatch – Several security values are checked before a transaction is authorized.
  • Fraud Prevention Tools – The 3-digit security code on the back of your card provides Internet and phone security by helping verify that you’re in possession of your card. In addition, with Verified by Visa, your identity is confirmed through a personal password while shopping at participating online merchants.
  • Real-Time Fraud Detection – We use the most advanced solutions for real-time fraud monitoring, screening your account 24/7 to detect suspicious card activity outside your normal pattern. If something seems abnormal, you’ll receive a phone call to let you know.

In the unlikely event you are a victim, we’ll work with you to ensure you’re not financially responsible for any fraudulent activity. There are steps you can take to help protect yourself as well. Some may seem like common sense, but it’s important to keep them in mind.

General tips on card safety:

  • If your card is ever lost or stolen, report it immediately
  • Don't leave your card where it can easily be taken, including in your car
  • Monitor your account regularly for any unauthorized transactions
  • Keep your account information with us current, so we're able to contact you quickly if there is activity that appears to be suspicious
  • Memorize your PIN, rather than writing it down
  • Shred documents that contain personal or financial information before you dispose of them
  • Before shopping online, be sure your computer has updated antivirus and spyware software installed
