SCE FCU re-opens Boyle Heights branch
six years after a 5.5 earthquake damaged the historic City Hall building

IRWINDALE, Calif. (July 21, 2014) – SCE Federal Credit Union, a not-for-profit and certified Community Development Financial Institution, re-opened its Boyle Heights branch in the historic City Hall building on July 19 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The city refurbished the building due to extensive damage from a 5.5-magnitude earthquake in 2008 centered in nearby Chino Hills.

The redesigned SCE FCU Boyle Heights branch drew inspiration from acclaimed Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, whose bold colors and geometric shapes create modern spaces, such as his remodeling of Los Angeles’ Pershing Square in 1993. Technology features throughout the branch include flat screen monitors to deliver marketing messages, tablets for members to view products and services, as well as a home banking station and self-serve coin machine.

“SCE Credit Union’s branch complements the rich Hispanic heritage of the Boyle Heights community,” said George Poitou, SCE FCU chief operating officer. “Its unique design and high-tech features enhance our members’ experience.”

The grand opening “fiesta” included $5,000 in gifts and prizes, free food and a chance to win $1,000 for opening a checking account, taking out a loan or getting a credit card.

SCE FCU hired seven employees to support the Boyle Heights branch operations and already is reporting a positive economic impact to the local economy, consisting of construction and building jobs to complete the new branch. SCE FCU was a City Hall tenant from 1999 until the building was closed due to earthquake damage.

Poitou added, “We’re thrilled to be back in Boyle Heights with a branch and look forward to serving the needs of the community. SCE Credit Union acts in the best interest of members who are residents and business owners in Boyle Heights, which is a great alternative to high-priced payday lenders.”
