IRWINDALE, Calif. (July 25, 2011) – SCE FCU (Southern California Edison Federal Credit Union headquartered in Irwindale, Calif. and serving more than 42,000 members) has been named 2011 Small Business of the Year by Assemblyman Roger Hernández, (D-San Gabriel Valley). The Small Business of the Year award was established by the California State Legislature to acknowledge the impact organizations have on local communities through acts of philanthropy and charity.
“The measure of a successful small business is not by how much profit it can post, but rather by how much it can give back to its community,” said Assemblymember Hernández. “By this standard, SCE FCU has grown to success not only by being a responsible financial institution, but a solid community pillar. I’m honored to recognize SCE FCU as the 57th District’s Small Business of the Year.”
SCE FCU’s employees have donated more than 5,000 volunteer hours during the past six years to community building programs, including “Santa Clothes,” which provides needy children with clothing, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Baldwin Park and food pantry drives. Additionally, SCE FCU conducted 440 financial literacy workshops for schools, employer groups and more than 8,700 residents throughout the city of Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley.
We’re honored to receive this distinction from Assemblyman Hernández because there are so many small businesses doing exceptional work in our community,” said SCE FCU CEO Dennis Huber. “I’m proud of our employees who are living the credit union motto of ‘people helping people.’”
SCE FCU created the SCE FCU Foundation, a [501(c)(3)] corporation, in 2005, to enable southern California residents to join the credit union by making a $15 deposit, of which $10 goes to local nonprofit organizations. The SCE FCU Foundation has contributed more than $240,000 towards improving the lives of disadvantage youth and low-income families.
SCE FCU was one of 75 small businesses acknowledged at the 2011 California Small Business Day convention in Sacramento.
SCE Federal Credit Union was founded in 1952 and currently has more than 42,000 members, $500 million in assets, several Southern California branch locations, thousands of shared branch locations across the United States and more than 28,000 surcharge-free ATMs available to members. SCE FCU serves all of Southern California, with membership open to individuals and businesses. SCE FCU is a not-for-profit entity committed to improving the financial well-being of the communities it serves, especially those underserved by mainstream financial institutions. With a strong commitment to volunteerism, employees donate hundreds of hours to local community causes each year. Additionally, the creation of the SCE FCU Foundation provides much-needed financial education to the underserved.
