LAS VEGAS, Nevada (July 31, 2012) –SCE Federal Credit Union is encouraging its members and the general public to come bearing gifts. From Aug. 1 - 31, the credit union will be collecting school supplies and money at its Las Vegas-area branches to support Western High School’s underprivileged students.
“Every student deserves to have the proper learning tools at their disposal to succeed in the classroom,” says Sue Longson, Vice President of Business Development & Community Relations for SCE Federal Credit Union. “This supplies drive is only the beginning of our partnership with Western High. We plan to conduct in-class financial literacy workshops, a ‘sparkle and shine’ personal necessities drive in October, and help curb the dropout rate by serving on Western’s ‘Reclaim Your Future’ task force, which goes door-to-door encouraging high-risk students to finish school.”
Western High is classified as a Title l school, due to the high number of low-income students enrolled. In 2011, Western qualified for federal School Improvement grants and has since introduced a curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and math.
“We’re fortunate to partner with an organization with such a great track record in the local communities they serve,” said Beverly Mason, Assistant Director of the Clark County School District’s School-Community Partnership Program. “With SCE Federal Credit Union’s backing, we hope to continually improve our students’ educational opportunities, participation and performance.”
SCE FCU has been supporting residents of Southern California for 60 years and in 2011, moved into Southern Nevada. SCE FCU’s foundation, established in 2005 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3), contributed more than $30,000 and 1,000 volunteer hours to community efforts last year alone.
School supplies/donations can be dropped off at:
SCE FCU - Sahara Branch
SCE FCU - Southwest Branch
SCE FCU - Ryan Branch
SCE FCU - Henderson Branch
“The simple donation of a calculator, a three-ring binder or a pack of pencils can make a significant impact on students’ education,” says Longson. “It’s about helping put local kids in a position to succeed.”
The SCE FCU Foundation is a non profit 501(c)(3) charitable agency whose mission is to educate underserved youth and families in the principles of personal finance.
