There’s nothing like a summer “blockbuster” to capture the terror of an extreme natural disaster, as in the 2015 movie San Andreas featuring action-star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Though the film may draw some attention to the risk of earthquakes – in this case “the big one” in California – news footage of the recent devastation caused by two deadly earthquakes in Nepal is more realistic.
According to a recent study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the likelihood a magnitude 8.0 or larger earthquake will strike California in the next 30 years has increased from 4.7% to about 7.0%. No one likes to think about people living in poverty, but it’s a growing problem that deserves our attention. 34% of children in the greater Los Angeles area, and 27% in Las Vegas, live at or below the poverty level. This is a trend likely to continue for generations to come without intentional intervention. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, children who experience poverty are substantially more likely to live in poverty as adults.
