Employ NV Youth Hub

Body

The glitz and glamour of Las Vegas is a celebrated, compelling side of Clark County. There’s also a more troubling side. More than 70% of all Nevada residents live in Clark County; nearly 50,000 of them, between the ages of 16 and 24, are considered disconnected youth. They’re young people who aren’t in school or actively seeking work. This age group struggles the most with unemployment. In 2020, the national unemployment rate for this cohort was 14.9%. In Nevada it was 23%. When you intervene at an impressionable age, you can do considerably more than help prevent poverty in adulthood. You can open doors, create opportunities, empower. Employ NV Youth Hub does just that.

Earn while you learn

There are qualifying requirements to enter the program, which can be found on the website. The Youth Hub’s Earn and Learn opportunities tackle two issues at once. They allow 16- to-24-year-olds to earn money while receiving on-the-job training. It’s money in their pockets and a career path. Participants get experience with employers in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. The paid internships or work experiences can evolve into long-term employment and obviously expand options.  Employ NV Youth Hub also pays for training in high demand industries. This is aimed at expanding an individual’s skill set so they can advance in their career.

Grounded in virtual reality

Employ NV Youth Hub helps teens and young adults find work, internships, pre-apprenticeships, get paid training, mentoring and more. In early August 2022, the first full-scale Employ NV Youth Hub and Teen Zone in Southern Nevada officially opened. The 2,500-square-foot facility is located inside the West Charleston Library, at 6301 W Charleston Blvd in Las Vegas.  Virtual Reality headsets are available to offer an immersive experience while learning about in-demand careers such as healthcare, advanced manufacturing, IT, logistics and more. The goal is to expose teens and young adults to well-paying careers and to provide them with the assistance and motivation necessary to get there.

The SCE Credit Union connection

Employ NV Youth Hub offers a long list of services, from the aforementioned Earn and Learn program to job training. Entrepreneurial skills, tutoring and mentoring are also available. There’s career and labor market information as well as guidance and counseling services. Financial literacy training is also part of the Youth Hub services, and that’s where our Credit Union steps in with financial workshops. Roselyn Noriega, the Deputy Director of Operations and Partnerships, is appreciative of the fact that the instruction is age and experience appropriate. “SCE Credit Union talks to high school-aged students about why it’s important to have a checking and savings account,” she says. “With older groups, the conversation turns to budget, and how to handle credit responsibly.” Noriega describes the  workshops as, “engaging and motivating.”

Making a better future

The Employ NV Youth Hub has an immediate, positive impact and they’re actively working to make a better future for Nevada. By empowering the next generation with the skills and savvy to succeed, they’re creating a reservoir of qualified workers for employers in the region. Our Credit Union wholeheartedly supports the work of the Employ NV Youth Hub and we know the applause they receive today will become tomorrow’s standing ovation.
