IRWINDALE, Calif. (July 14, 2014) –  SCE Federal Credit Union (SCE FCU) recently became a sponsor of “Tu Mundo Hoy!,” a daily one-hour, Spanish-language TV show that takes an in-depth look at health and financial issues facing the Hispanic community. The show provides a weekly forum on Los Angeles TV station KJLA (Channel 57) for SCE FCU financial gurus to provide insights and advice.

“The U.S. has the second largest Hispanic population in the world and it continues to grow at a rapid pace. Our show provides engaging, informative content that’s relevant to Hispanic families and arms them with the tools to make good financial decisions for home and business settings,” said Gabi Barbarena, Principal, Hispanic Business News Network TV. “SCE Federal Credit Union is a strong advocate for the millions of Hispanics living in Southern California and is the ideal partner to provide financial education and information to this community.”

SCE FCU is the founder of the Center for Financial Empowerment (formerly SCE Federal Credit Union Foundation), a nonprofit financial institution dedicated to educating communities in Southern California and Southern Nevada about personal finance. The organization, born from the credit union’s desire to address the widespread need for basic financial education, partners with schools and community organizations to offer financial education, assistance and improvement programs.

“This partnership with ‘Tu Mundo Hoy!’ mirrors our goal of empowering people to make better financial decisions and achieve a higher quality of life. It’s exciting to be a part of a project designed to help educate our local communities and to be a partner in their growth,” said George Poitou, chief operating officer of SCE FCU and Center for Financial Education board member. “We’re a resource people can turn to with whatever financial questions or concerns they may have and this platform provided by KJLA allows us to share our insights firsthand.”

Hosted by local, Emmy-Award winning radio personality Carlos Alvarez and long-time TV news personality Ofelia de la Torre, “Tu Mundo Hoy!” airs Monday through Friday from 2:00-3:00 p.m. throughout Los Angeles and surrounding cities.

SCE Federal Credit Union was founded in 1952 and currently has approximately 50,000 members, $600 million in assets, several Southern California and Southern Nevada branch locations, thousands of shared branch locations across the United States, and nearly 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs available to members.

SCE FCU serves the Greater Los Angeles and Las Vegas areas, with membership open to individuals and businesses, and is a not-for-profit entity committed to improving the financial well-being of the communities it serves, especially people underserved by mainstream financial institutions. With a strong commitment to volunteerism, employees donate hundreds of hours to local community causes each year. Additionally, the creation of the Center for Financial Empowerment, formerly the SCE FCU Foundation provides much-needed financial education to the underserved and high schools in Las Vegas, Nevada and in Duarte, Baldwin Park, Boyle Heights, Ontario and Lynwood, Calif.
