IRWINDALE, Calif. (August 7, 2013) – The Center for Financial Empowerment, formerly SCE Federal Credit Union Foundation, has awarded a total of $14,000 to 19 college-bound young adults in the greater Los Angeles area. Established in 2010, the Center’s scholarship program has contributed $55,000 overall to help local students reach their academic goals.

The recently renamed non-profit Center, founded by SCE Federal Credit Union in 2005, offers financial literacy courses to high school students, and provides scholarships to career-oriented students who have participated in a course.

“The goal of this scholarship program is to give an extra boost to students who have demonstrated the ability to make smart financial choices, are involved in the community and have high career aspirations,” said Abby Ulm, Center Director. “This year’s recipients are pursuing a diverse selection of careers, including nursing, medicine, pharmacology, cosmetic engineering, underwater welding, music production, live theater management and even a tattoo artist who wants to own a chain of stores for tattoo services.

“College tuition is expensive and each of these students, who are limited financially, still shows passion, enthusiasm and determination to achieve success.”

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the average annual cost of public school has increased 6.5 percent each year over the last decade. By 2030, annual public tuition will be $44,047. The total cost for a four-year degree will be more than $205,000.

“Our Board is pleased to award these students with some money for college – and is also inspired and hopeful for the future – having seen a glimpse of the ambition, drive and potential in the upcoming generation,” said Ulm.

The majority of scholarship recipients were accepted to a university in the highly-competitive UC school system.
