LAS VEGAS, Nev. (August 7, 2013) –  The Center for Financial Empowerment, formerly SCE Federal Credit Union Foundation, has awarded $2,000 in scholarship money to three recent high school graduates from Las Vegas. This is the first year the Center has invited applicants from Nevada to participate in the scholarship program, which was established in 2010.

The recently renamed non-profit Center, founded by SCE Federal Credit Union in 2005, offers financial literacy courses to high school students and provides scholarships to career-oriented students who have completed a course, as well as demonstrated leadership qualities and strong ties to their communities.

“College tuition is expensive. Each of these students, who are from low-income families, is receiving very little financial help for college from their parents, yet still shows passion, enthusiasm and determination to reach their educational and career goals,” said Abby Ulm, Center Director.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the average annual cost of public school has increased 6.5 percent each year over the last decade. That means that by 2030, annual public tuition will be $44,047. The total cost for a four-year degree will be more than $205,000.

Below are the 2013 SCE Federal Credit Union scholarship recipients.

$1,000 scholarship was awarded to:

Elizabeth Brown (Las Vegas, NV going to College of Southern Nevada)

$500 scholarships were awarded to:

Patricia Cervantes (Las Vegas, NV going to College of Southern Nevada)

Ashantii McMorris (Las Vegas, NV going to Lincoln College of Technology)
